Golf package is one of the most beautiful words in the Swedish language. What’s best is when the course and the housing are so close together that a tired hobby golfer can drag him or herself out of bed via the breakfast buffet and be at the first tee, as at Körunda Golf & Conference Hotel, just forty kilometres south of the capital.
The course - Nynäshamn's GK - offers 27 varied holes divided into three courses: Valley, Lake and Mountain. In addition to what the name tells you, we can reveal that the latter requires more accuracy off the tee and that some of the holes on the Lake course on a beautiful late summer evening are so strikingly beautiful that you will completely forget that your swing is not. The Valley is definitely the course for those who like to bash with the driver.
The test patrol consisting of two players with handicaps of 11 and 25 arrived at Körunda a warm late summer day after only 30 minutes by car from Stockholm. The public rooms were bright and clean and in the reception we got a first ladle of what more than anything else made an impression on us: the pleasant staff. After check-in and room inspection we sat to rest on the large veranda overlooking the first hole of the Mountain course.
On the tee, one of the day’s last groups was ready to tee off. The sun warmed just enough and not even the metallic sound of a Cobra driver could disrupt the feeling that Sweden - despite what sometimes feels like eight months of frost - is the world's best golfing country.
After the warm-up on the veranda we got to grips with the restaurant. Equally nice staff here! Not fawning in any way, but with a pleasant and relaxed manner that easily rubs off on the guests.
As a conference hotel Körunda has invested heavily in good food and this is of course something that even weekend celebrating golfers will benefit from. Best known perhaps is the kitchen for its fine cuisine. We chose a lower level of ambition and went for a two-course - that slipped down splendidly.
We ended the evening with a game of pool, and after putting some spectacular shock was self-confidence for tomorrow's 27 holes on the top.
The rooster was still having his beauty sleep when we teed up on the first tee in the Valley course. The strategy was to walk nine holes before breakfast and 18 afterwards.
After 90 minutes of “chopping” - and the realization that golf is something very different from pool - my stomach was significantly psyched when we met the smell of freshly brewed coffee and fresh bread in the breakfast room.
A little over an hour later the first nine were forgotten and the focus was entirely on the 18 holes: the Lake and Mountain courses. In the former, hole four stands out, a dogleg left that requires a solid drive to get into position for the approach. The second shot offers a beautiful view down towards the green which is right on the waterline.
On the Mountain course we like hole number two with high-placed tees and bunkers in play both to the left and the right - here it’s more brain than power off the tee. The hole afterwards - a sharp dogleg right - requires the right length on the shot. Twenty metres too short or too long and you have to pitch yourself into position to get on the green. For medium-handicappers, we have a hot tip for hole 8, a par 4 uphill: play it like par 5 otherwise you risk ending up at the chiropractor after your ambitions with the driver.
In our opinion, these two courses are somewhat more marked than the Valley - good to know if you only intended to play 18 holes. Considering that it is an all-day green fee, we think that you should play all 27 holes - and why not do like us and stay at the hotel to get an early start.
