Snow golf, ummm..?
“Super fun! I'm really surprised. It was my first time but not last,” says Golfresan’s correspondent Marlene "Maddening" Hedblom after she tried snow golf in Arvidsjaur.
Snow golf on the Tvättjärn Lake in Arvidsjaur is now in its seventh year.
“People don’t think it’s golf until they’ve played. Then they change their perception, "says Jörgen Andersson. He is the snow-hole course green keeper. Or in this case the “white keeper”.
“March and April are great up here. During the day its 10-15 degrees and people play in short sleeves. At night, it’s the same number of minus degrees below. There’s no chance the course won’t hold, "says Jorgen.
More and more people are discovering snow golf and annual [membership] cards are becoming increasingly attractive.
“In March and April it is full speed ahead on the weekends. In April you can play until nine o'clock at night, "says Jorgen.
About 5,100 people live in town which is located in Lapland, one hundred ten kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. There are 4,000 lakes in the municipality and unspoiled rivers. Nature and its inhabitants are always close by. Here there are 15,000 reindeer, bears, moose, wolverines, beavers and lynx. And forest birds, of course - owls, grouse, black grouse and grouse.
Arvidsjaur is Lappish and means "The Bountiful Sea". Speaking of Lapps, there are some 20 families that still earn their living from reindeer herding, the original industry.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT WINTER GOLF
There is not much difference between summer and winter golf but winter golf goes a bit faster. Don’t forget to hire a kick-sled (costs SEK 40) for the bag!
What does it cost?
- SEK 200 for daily green fee.
What are the hours?
- From February 1 to April 21.
What distinguishes snow golf from ordinary golf?
- You have to hit more straight on the ball. But the ball bounces and rolls in the same way as on a summer course.
How does it look on the greens?
- Even and plain. There are rakes to clean up the green with. Note: It is mandatory to run the rake over the green after yourself.
How it looks on the tee?
- Tee-ramp or snow, it’s up to you.
Need a green card?
- No.
How is the course prepared?
- Piste machine, plus a four-wheeler with cable. Four people work full time taking care of the course.
Are there special balls necessary?
- No. Red or yellow balls are recommended.
Are special clubs necessary?
- No.
Is there a golf shop where you can rent clubs?
- Yes.
What are the rules?
Location improvement within two scorecards across the entire course area.
When a ball is lost a new ball is dropped where the lost ball last crossed the fairway area.
Loose snow on the greens is defined as loose natural objects and may be moved from the putting line.
On the fifth tee has snowmobiles and skiers have the right of way.
Course markings in the form of bushes and 150-metre marks.
Obligatory visit to the pub after the round.
