Mauritius, Belle Mare Plage - Enchantingly beautiful golf course
Challenge the golfer in you with tricky rounds at The Legends and the Links Course to just before evening enjoy the fact that you are living like a sovereign on the Belle Mare Plage.
More than once you have to pinch your arm.
Ouch! You are awake. And it's also true that it is you who’s sitting there, like a well-known urbane British agent, leaning back in the wicker chair, wearing white summer trousers with a matching short-sleeved shirt watching the blood red sun sinking into the Indian Ocean. In just a few minutes, it’s as black as coffee.
The sun goes down quickly on Mauritius, an island that is really only a small fly-speck on a world map with 1.3 million inhabitants. Although the population density is among the highest in the world, as a tourist you don’t notice it much. Mauritius is a cosmopolitan society where all ethnic groups have lived side by side in harmony for centuries. Indians, Chinese, Creoles, Africans and Europeans have all brought with them their customs and traditions that they try to keep alive the best they can. It seems to be going just fine.
You find just as much fraternisation at the dining table. The food in Mauritius is exquisite. Choose between Indian, Creole, French and Asian cuisine. English cuisine is missing, however, which we are especially thankful for, that despite the fact that Mauritius was a British colony from 1810 until 1968.
End the meal with vanilla flavoured Creole tea. Wine is expensive while the local beer, Phoenix, is both good and relatively cheap.
The white sand stretches out along much of the coast and the beaches are not usually very crowded. The water is crystal clear, shimmering green, warm and inviting. You have to bathe often.
Belle Mare Plage - The Resort is amongst the absolute crème de la crème of all of the island's luxury hotels. Since Mauritius has always been careful to limit hotel construction and tourism, there is no 'hooligan tourism" here. Virtually all hotels have at least three stars, often four, or in the case of Belle Mare Plage, nearly five stars. And if you don’t think Belle Mare feels luxurious enough, its sister hotel, Le Prince Maurice, is always obtainable. Here we are talking five stars, at least ...
Internationally famous Belle Mare offers, amongst other things, water sports, fishing, diving, well everything, and two swimming pools, tennis courts and miniature golf.
And then there’s golf on two of the island's best golf courses, The Legends and the Links Course. The professional Air Mauritius Open is played annually in December with a strong starting field.
A round on either of these courses need not be as strenuous as a marathon, despite the heat. It’s not very hilly, but if you feel like it, there are both caddies and golf carts available. On the Links Course you are forced to use the golf cart. If you are going to play at The Legends or the Links Course you need to shape up. Precision is the key word. Expect to use many balls.

THE LEGENDS
Opened: 1994
Architects: Hugh Baiocchi, South Africa
Number of holes: 18
Length, blue tees: 6,014 metres
White Tee: 5,620 metres
Red Tee: 4,448 metres
Par: 72
Rating: Not such a long course. "Easy", you might think. Ha! The Legends is really difficult and tricky where precision is rewarded over distance. There’s a lot of water in the game. Bring a lot of balls.
LINKS COURSE
Opened: 2002
Architect: Peter Allis, England
Number of holes: 18
Length, blue tees: 6,009 metres
White Tee: 5,495 metres
Red Tee: 4,131 metres
Par: 71.
Rating: Well maintained and in great condition already, but interesting layout, and several small tricky doglegs. Large, undulating greens; not as ball-hungry as The Legends.
