Golf, culture and cuisine of Pisa.
If I say Pisa, what do you think of?
It is probably the city's most famous building which first appears on the retina.
The Leaning Tower in all its glory, but we travel to Pisa for the golf. Well, albeit perhaps not the golfing world's most golf course dense area, but the combination of good golf and Tuscan culture, cuisine and climate makes the region an attractive destination.
Tirrenia is a small coastal town just south of Pisa. During low season, when most golfers are visiting, it is quiet and nice. The miles and miles of beaches are deserted in anticipation of the invasion of sun thirsty tourists. On the outskirts of the city is the golf course Cosmopolitan, a modern park course whose most distinguishing characteristics are large and well-placed water hazards.
In 1993 the course was voted as Italy's best newly built course, and 14 years later, we can ascertain that it has maintained its standard, both in terms of layout and quality. During the autumn, the course has suffered from the unusually dry and hot summer, but the quality is absolutely acceptable. At Cosmopolitan what matters most is avoiding the water, and thereafter to master the big, fast and gently undulating greens.
Nearby is also the excellent Versilia GC course, which is also pretty flat. The difference is that here you play a course that lies wedged between the majestic mountain ridges and Mediterranean Sea.
Tuscany is the heart of Italy's gastronomic heritage, and the region's wine and olive oil are among the world's foremost. A tour of the beautiful landscape also offers many occasions for experiences for both the eye and palate. Did you know by the way, that bread is Tuscany's traditional basic diet, and not pasta? Keep up the tradition by dipping a freshly baked piece of bread and enjoy with a little salt. Like Tuscany, it is simply irresistible.
