Wentworth Club - an old classic
The driveway to the rebuilt and enlarged (1993) white clubhouse passes through dazzling rhododendron bushes. From Heathrow’s noise and stress, it feels like arriving at an oasis once within the Wentworth Club. It's beautiful, to say the least, with stately trees of various kinds and flower arrangements.
Golf has been played here since 1924. At Wentworth, there are three golf courses and 15 tennis courts with four different surfaces; there is of course also a gym, spa and pools, indoor and outside.
The area has for many years been familiar to millions of TV viewers because it is here that the big PGA tournaments and World Match Play Championships are televised around the world in the spring and autumn. The forerunner of the Ryder Cup, the Curtis Cup, was decided at Wentworth already in 1926.
The course that we are so familiar with is called the West Course, opened in 1927. In 2002 it was designated as Britain's 19th best course. The West Course is normally played over 6,132 metres, in the championship tournaments 6, 437 metres, par 73. The Australian Wayne Reley holds the course record, 63 strokes. The green fee during high season is 225 pounds. If you’re wondering whether to bring colleagues and good friends and rent the course for 72 minutes for a great start, it costs 6,500 pounds or roughly 7,733 euros. The two other, less famous and less expensive courses, are called East Course, built in 1924 and Edinburgh Course from 1990. It goes without saying that it is possible to stay at the club. Double rooms cost from 140 pounds, single rooms from 90.
