Play golf on Møn
Denmark will spoil you with fabulous natural and relaxed golf. Come along to the little island of Møn for a restful moment!
That Denmark is the world's oldest kingdom perhaps you already knew. Maybe even that the Danish flag is the world's oldest national flag, from 1219.
What you may not know is that Scandinavia's southernmost spot is on the island of Lolland-Falster, specifically, at Gedser Odde. Not far away from there is Møn, one of the country's many islands.
This part of Denmark is one of the most beautiful and most scenic. You are never far from the sea (it is never more than 50 kilometres to the sea no matter where you are in Denmark), and inviting beaches are not hard to find. There are also many magnificent castles and manor houses that bear witness to the greatness of times past. Also on Mon is the Knuthenborg Zoo - Northern Europe's largest zoo.
This time it was neither the lack of sandy beaches nor camels which led us to take the bridge over to our exciting neighbouring country. It was more a desire to play golf in a relaxed atmosphere and at the same time get a chance to "hygge” ourselves." “Hygge” means roughly to enjoy oneself, a lifestyle that Danes obviously master much better than the Swedes.
When it comes to golf is it also pleasant relaxation and a nice atmosphere that count. Some courses, however, are easier to access than others. There is always a course in the vicinity and there are courses of all kinds, from the most demanding championship course to easier courses.
Møn Golf Center is one of those pleasant courses. The 18-hole course opened in 1994 and is today a very nice experience. The course is built around a lake and from most holes there is a stunningly beautiful view of the scenic surroundings.
The course is pretty flat, but don’t think that it’s easily played. The wind makes itself felt on most of the holes and can create problems for those who are not used to it. The quality of the course is of a very high standard, and as an added plus on the edge of it mulled wine is served in the kiosk. It warms you up well on slightly cold autumn days.
A must if you are the least romantically inclined is Møn’s cliff. The vertical, white limestone cliffs rise over 100 metres from the sea. If I hadn’t known better, I would certainly have guessed that I was in Dover. To be able to fully enjoy the cliffs, you need only take a take a night stroll. Four-hundred ninety-four steps lead down to the beach and equally as many up again. After such a hardship, we feel well worth “enjoying ourselves" and where does one do it better than in Denmark?
