The Lost City GC
With its deep green fairways, contrasting natural bushveld and a spectacularly fantasy-African palace in the background, the Lost City golf course is a must when playing in South Africa. Unusual water hazards is just one of the details that make this course in desert style so interesting to play on. The most famous is the pond on the downward slanting par 3, thirteenth hold that is overrun with crocodiles – 38 of them – some 2 metres long! Players are advised not to look for balls that have been hit astray... Even if Lost City appears to be more open and forgiving than its celebrated colleague, this Gary Player run has large sandy areas and deep bunkers that build formidable obstacles around the greens. Water flows across the third and fifteenth holes, and multi-layered water hazards on the eighth and eighteenth holes test players' nerves and ability. With its rugged and hilly terrain, and in several places when the course leads players along the border towards Pilanesberg National Park, a reserve with The Five Big Ones (elephants, lions, rhinos, buffalo and leopards) the game is rather often transformed into a golf safari.
