Carton - The Montgomerie Course

The Montgomerie golf course, which gets its inspiration from the world's largest links course, pays tribute to the game's traditions and exhorts to a challenge like no other. This is golf at the highest level. This is adrenalin and golf play at its best. The course, which was designed by Colin Montgomerie, is a journey over sweeping fairways, deep bunkers and pristine greens. This is an adventure from start to finish and we are proud to have hosted the world's best golf players during the Irish Open in 2005 and 2006.

”I tried to go back to a more traditional golf course with my design. I looked at the big courses all over the world – the Royal Melbourne, Troon, Turnberry – and figured out what was so good about them. One thing hit me – bunkers. They are obstacles and they cooperate with the prevailing winds. Few holes follow the direction of the wind, but rather have a tendency to stretch across and this is where the bunkers come into the picture. This is the type of course where the best players always get the upper hand”.
